چکیده

The present study directly tests the relationship between children’s performance in an analogy-making task involving semantic analogies and their inhibitory-control capacities tested with the Day-Night test (Gerstadt, Hong, & Diamond, 1994). Our claim is that the development of analogy making can be best studied in terms of developmental changes in executive functioning, specifically, inhibitory control (Richland et al., 2006; Thibaut et al., 2010a,b). The selection of common relational structure requires the inhibition of other salient, semantically related matches. Our results show that children with lower inhibition scores had lower scores in an analogy task of the A:B::C:D type, especially for analogies constructed with pairs of weakly semantically associated items (e.g., man-bed). The results agree with our analogymaking account. We also show that analogies with perceptual distractors were easier to solve than those with semantic distractors.

Analogical reasoning and aging: the processing speed and inhibition hypothesis.

This study was designed to investigate the effect of aging on analogical reasoning by manipulating the strength of semantic association (LowAssoc or HighAssoc) and the number of distracters' semantic analogies of the A:B::C:D type and to determine which factors might be responsible for the age-related differences on analogical reasoning by testing two different theoretical frameworks: the inhib...

Background and Purpose: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has caused numerous psychological problems in society, and mothers of young children are among those at risk for these problems. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of Covid-19-induced Anxiety in mothers with young children and the role of spiritual well-being and attachment to God in the prediction of this anxiety. CrossBridge: Finding Analogies Using Dimensionality Reduction

We present CROSSBRIDGE, a practical algorithm for retrieving analogies in large, sparse semantic networks. Other algorithms adopt a generate-and-test approach, retrieving candidate analogies by superficial similarity of concepts, then testing them for the particular relations involved in the analogy. CROSSBRIDGE adopts a global approach. It organizes the entire knowledge space at once, as a mat...

foundations of novel knowledge systems

The ability to represent the abstract relationships between concepts is often central to how learners create fundamentally new systems of knowledge. Young children learn not only names of objects and labels for features, but also the relational roles objects occupy. For example, children come to know that “paper” beats “rock” in roshambo, despite the fact that this relationship cannot be derive...

Semantic Reconstruction of Beauty and Makeup for Young Females: The Phenomenological Study

The concept of beauty is closely linked to gender in contemporary society; in this study, the concept of beauty was explored by the use of phenomenological techniques. For this purpose, an in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted among 35 young female students in Tehran. the sample of study was chosen by theoretical sampling model and the interviews were continued up to the point of  ga...
